Definition of terms often heard relating to the oil spill crisis.
Barrel – 42 U. S. Gallons
Berm – A raised barrier separating two areas. Man-made or natural, a berm provides a reservoir to hold oil in a certain area.
Boom – A temporary floating barrier used to contain an oil spill. Booms help make oil recovery easier by confining the oil into a concentrated area.
Dispersant – A chemical solution that causes the creation of small oil droplets, making the oil more biodegradable, therefore accelerating the process of natural dispersion.
Tarballs – A weathered emulsion of oil and water that have formed into pliable balls or patches.
Vessel of Opportunity – Usually a private-owned boat or craft, offered and enlisted for service during a crisis.
